HOW TO PASS UTAH EMISSIONS THE FIRST TIME

1. Don't clear the check engine light before testing

This is the number one wasted trip we see. Clearing codes also clears your car's readiness monitors, and the test will reject the car as "not ready." The same thing happens after a dead battery or a battery replacement. Drive 100 to 200 mixed miles after any code clear before you test.

2. A lit check engine light is an automatic fail

If the light is on, the car fails before it's even tested. Fix the cause first. Come by and we'll scan it for free and tell you what the code means in plain language. Sometimes it's as small as a loose gas cap. If it needs a repair and we do it, the diagnostic fee is waived.

3. Test with a warmed-up engine

A cold engine runs rich and reads dirty. If you can, drive 15 or 20 minutes before the test instead of rolling in first thing after a cold start. That alone tips some borderline cars from fail to pass.

4. The usual suspects when a car really does fail

The failures we actually repair, most to least common: oxygen sensors past their prime, EVAP leaks (that gas cap again, or a cracked hose), and a catalytic converter that's stopped doing its job. None of them are mysteries. We'll show you the readings, explain what's worn, and give you the options before any work starts.

5. If you fail, the retest is free

Salt Lake County requires the fee to be the same whether you pass or fail, and a free re-inspection within 30 days after a repair. That's exactly how we run it. Fail anywhere, bring us the report, and once we fix the cause your retest here costs nothing.
